Chapter Fifty-Nine: Lin Su
In early July, the results of the provincial No. 1 Middle School entrance exam were released. Yu Wen and his wife both took leave from work to accompany Yu Qian to check her results.
Yu Qian did exceptionally well—out of a total of 660 points across nine subjects, she scored 646, placing fourth overall.
The top scorer was someone named Lin Su—a name that was clearly feminine.
As Yu Qian gazed at this name, her expression grew a little odd.
In her previous life, she had a friend called Lin Su—a very beautiful girl—but that friend had not attended this school.
Though she was curious about what this Lin Su looked like, she had never considered she might be the same person as her friend. She distinctly remembered Lin Su telling her she had attended Provincial No. 7 Middle School for both junior high and high school.
Just as they were about to leave, a shrill scream suddenly erupted from the crowd: “Ahhh!”
The owner of that voice threw her arms around the person next to her, bouncing up and down. “Ahhh! I’m first! I actually got first place!”
The familiar voice made Yu Qian halt in her tracks. She turned silently to look at the girl in the midst of the crowd.
“Hey! Why are you hugging me?” The boy being embraced blushed crimson, looking extremely uncomfortable.
The girl, however, was too excited to hear him and continued to cling to him enthusiastically.
Unable to break free, the boy spoke again, this time with a hint of despair: “How long are you going to keep hugging me?”
His voice was loud enough to snap the girl back to her senses. She immediately let go, her face flushing as she apologized repeatedly: “Sorry, sorry, I was just too excited.”
“Hmph.” The boy snorted haughtily, then looked up at the scoreboard.
He paused for a moment, then asked, “You’re first? The one called Lin Su?”
“That’s right! What about you? Which place did you get?” The girl—Lin Su—grinned without a care in the world.
The boy’s expression was odd. He glanced at the board again, then declared fiercely, “I’m telling you, you only got first this time because you were lucky. Next time, I’ll definitely surpass you!”
“Oh? And what’s your name?” Lin Su tilted her head, blinking at him.
He raised his chin proudly. “I’m Chen Jiu Yi. Remember my name, because next time, I’ll defeat you.”
“Alright then, we’ll see in the next exam.” She waved at him cheerfully and turned back to the scoreboard.
Glancing up, she immediately noticed that Chen Jiu Yi’s name was right below hers—just one point behind.
Lin Su was silent for a moment, an uneasy premonition stirring within her.
Not far off, Yu Qian watched the scene with an even stranger look in her eyes.
This Lin Su was indeed her friend from her previous life, and if her memory served her right, the boy—Chen Jiu Yi—had been Lin Su’s husband.
But as she recalled, both Lin Su and Chen Jiu Yi had attended Provincial No. 7 Middle School. They had started dating in high school, and during the college entrance exams, Lin Su had performed below her usual standard and ended up at the same university where Yu Qian studied, while Chen Jiu Yi did well and entered Yunjing University. Most importantly, the two had married right after graduating from university.
Yu Qian had once envied their relationship. She’d heard Lin Su recount their first meeting many times.
But this—this wasn’t how it was supposed to happen!
In Lin Su’s stories, they had become desk mates at the very start of high school, taken a liking to each other, and then gotten together.
Yet just now, the two had met for the first time in front of the No. 1 Middle School’s admissions list, with Lin Su outscoring Chen Jiu Yi by a single point.
This was a complete deviation from her past life’s script. In that instant, Yu Qian thought of the movie “The Butterfly Effect,” which she’d watched before.
She began to suspect that her own rebirth had inadvertently altered the destinies of those around her.
Feeling a bit conflicted, she steadied herself and walked into the crowd, making her way to Lin Su’s side.
Lin Su, still pondering how she could always outperform Chen Jiu Yi, suddenly sensed someone standing next to her. She turned and found herself only reaching the person’s shoulder.
Looking up, she saw a strikingly beautiful girl.
The girl was at least twenty centimeters taller than she was, with fair skin and delicate features.
