Chapter Fifty-Three
This project had actually begun preparations even before Zhou Jingchen came to Sichuan to study, but at the time, most of the company’s focus was on the gaming division, so progress was slow. Now that everything was going smoothly with the game, they could finally devote more resources to the video website.
All the team members were in place.
Besides quality and content, Zhou Jingchen also wanted the site to feature bullet comments. In his previous life, every video platform had implemented this feature, and it had indeed become hugely popular. None of the current sites, however, offered it. Zhou Jingchen was determined to be the first to try.
At the initial meetings, everyone was plagued by concerns about the server. They had pinned their hopes on Zhou Jingchen, but he had never delved into server technology, neither in his past life nor this one. If he took it on himself, he would waste precious time learning and experimenting.
And time was money.
If he spent too long developing it himself, someone else might solve the problem first.
“My friend says she has a solution. I’ll take a look when the time comes,” Zhou Jingchen decided, stroking his chin. “Let’s adjourn for now.”
After spending two days at home poring over books, Zhou Jingchen still found himself utterly baffled by servers.
Just as he was getting frustrated, Wen Xiu arrived with Yu Qian in tow.
She was holding a small cardboard box, her face alight with excitement. “Come on, I’m here to blow your mind!”
When Zhou Jingchen saw what she was holding, his expression changed. It wasn’t one of the large, space-hogging machines commonly seen; instead, it was a small box. She claimed it could support all of Yunzhou’s software clients as a server—he couldn’t believe it.
Could something so small really do the job?
Pulling Yu Qian to sit beside him, Zhou Jingchen asked, “Sweetheart, is there really someone this impressive?”
“Yes. Very impressive,” Yu Qian nodded, then leaned in to whisper in his ear, “Better than any server we saw in our previous life. With this, your Yunbo, ‘Ethereal Beauty,’ and the video site will never crash again.”
He was somewhat shocked. He didn’t trust Wen Xiu, but he trusted Yu Qian’s words.
Wen Xiu pushed the box into his arms. “Hurry up and give it a try.”
Still stunned, Zhou Jingchen instinctively set about testing it. To his surprise, the server in his hands ran exceedingly smoothly.
His shock quickly turned to excitement. With this, he never had to worry about software crashes again.
“Wen Xiu, the profit-sharing we discussed is settled!”
Wen Xiu raised an eyebrow. “How much does Qian Qian get?”
“The same as you—thirty percent.”
Yu Qian’s parents had worked hard for two years and achieved modest success, but their foundation still couldn’t compare to Zhou Jingchen’s. He wanted Yu Qian to have better resources and connections, and had long since planned to bring her into his company’s projects so they could make money together.
Yu Qian was a little bewildered. “Why am I getting thirty percent?”
“The video site. You and I each get thirty percent, and Zhou Jingchen’s company gets the other thirty,” Wen Xiu answered with another arched eyebrow.
“What for? I didn’t do anything,” she protested, even more confused.
“If it weren’t for you, I never would’ve thought of setting up a website, let alone finding someone to make a server. You deserve it.”
“Zhou Jingchen! I don’t want it!” She ignored Wen Xiu and turned to Zhou Jingchen.
He was still absorbed in examining the box, not responding.
She walked over, nudged him, and called, “Zhou Jingchen.”
“Hmm?” He snapped out of his reverie.
“I said I don’t want a share of your project.”
He reached out to ruffle her hair, smiling gently. “But I want to give it to you.”
“I. Said. I. Don’t. Want. It!” Yu Qian enunciated each word, her expression serious.
He patted her head again, still gentle. “Be good. Just accept what I give you. You amuse yourself here for a while, I need to contact the company.”
Fuming, Yu Qian didn’t reply. She turned and stormed back to her own place.
This was high-handed and unfair.
“I’ll go keep Qian Qian company. You two hurry and finish the website,” Wen Xiu said, waving as she left.
Zhou Jingchen wanted to go after Yu Qian and comfort her, but he also wanted to finish his work as soon as possible—so he could have more time with her.
As he hesitated, Wen Xiu had already made the decision for him.
