Chapter Fifty-One: The Clever Wenxiu
As expected, Su Daji was scolded by Nuwa.
“Na-na-na~” She teased her one more time and left the small cave paradise.
After all the commotion, Yu Qian didn’t feel like lying down anymore.
“Xiu, what are you up to?”
Coming downstairs, she found Wen Xiu staring blankly at the TV. Glancing at the screen, she saw that “The Return of the Condor Heroes” was playing.
Directed by Zhang the Bearded, with the ethereal goddess version of Little Dragon Maiden.
Yu Qian liked everything about this adaptation, except for the male lead. He simply didn’t give her that feeling of “one glance at Yang Guo, and you’re smitten for life.”
She went to the kitchen, grabbed a bun, and started munching. When she returned, Wen Xiu was still gazing dazedly at the TV, lost in thought.
“Xiu Xiu?” Yu Qian sat beside her and patted her on the shoulder.
“Huh?” Wen Xiu snapped back to reality, looking puzzled.
“What are you thinking about? Staring at the TV and not responding.”
Wen Xiu didn’t answer, turning her head back to the screen and drifting off again. Yu Qian had no idea what was going on in her mind, and grew a bit worried about her state. After finishing the bun, she just sat there in silence with her.
After a while, Wen Xiu suddenly spoke. “I was just thinking, all these TV dramas are adapted from novels. We have money now but no resources—should we, like them, buy some novels, adapt them ourselves, find a director and actors, and film our own shows?”
Yu Qian was taken aback. “You mean IP adaptations?”
“Yes.”
“It’s easy enough to buy rights and make a show, but can you find a TV station willing to buy it?”
“If it doesn’t air on TV, what about selling DVDs or to video websites?”
Yu Qian looked at her, her expression odd.
“Qian Qian, why are you looking at me like that?” Wen Xiu felt uncomfortable under her stare.
Yu Qian’s face grew even more complicated. “Why does it feel like you’re the one who’s been reincarnated rather than me?”
Wen Xiu stared back blankly, not understanding why she’d say that.
“Wait a few more years. Many shows that can’t air on TV will be streamed online—they’ll be called web dramas.” Pausing, she continued, “Web dramas don’t need to be broadcast, and the regulatory approval will be much looser. Plus, the online audience is much larger.”
“Isn’t that pretty good, then?”
“It is good, but right now the problem is, there are only a few video websites in China, and their servers are terrible, and the video quality is poor. When web dramas emerged in my previous life, there were already several well-developed video platforms, all with top-notch features and quality.”
Wen Xiu’s heart sank at her words. “So what you’re saying is, even if we film a show, if we can’t find a TV station to buy it, we’ll basically be stuck with a loss?”
“Exactly!” Yu Qian confirmed.
Wen Xiu rubbed her forehead and fell back into deep thought.
Meanwhile, Yu Qian, carefree as ever, fetched half a watermelon from the fridge and began scooping it out to eat.
When it came to business, Wen Xiu was far more astute than her. With Wen Xiu worrying about things, all Yu Qian needed to do was focus on her talents and academic performance.
“What do you think about us starting our own video website?”
“Cough, cough—cough, cough, cough…” Wen Xiu’s sudden question startled Yu Qian, who was watching TV and eating watermelon, making her choke. “What did you say?”
Wen Xiu, stroking her chin, was very serious. “I said, what if we start our own video website? Then we won’t have to worry about not having a platform for our shows.”
Now it was Yu Qian’s turn to fall silent.
“Neither of us knows how to code, and even if we managed to build it, we couldn’t get it approved. Even if we passed the approval, we don’t have the connections to get other TV shows, movies, anime, or variety programs onto our site. Without those, we can’t keep users,” Yu Qian couldn’t help but pour cold water on the idea.
Wen Xiu wasn’t discouraged. After a moment’s thought, she said, “Isn’t Zhou Jingchen a programmer? He can handle the website. And even if we lack the connections, he has them. He can get approval and secure other resources.”
“So you’re suggesting I go cozy up to Zhou Jingchen?” Yu Qian’s mouth twitched; she could hardly believe it.
Wen Xiu was completely at ease. “Well, Zhou Jingchen will end up being yours anyway. Relying on him is basically relying on yourself, isn’t it?”
“He’s not mine,” Yu Qian insisted.
Wen Xiu pursed her lips, not telling her that their fates were entwined by destiny and Zhou Jingchen was bound to become her man.
Wen Xiu planned to discuss the matter with Zhou Jingchen herself, but before she did, she wanted to visit Nuwa and the others.
She wanted to ask if they were interested in watching mortal entertainment. If they were, she’d request a server from Heaven itself to connect the six realms to the internet.
