The Third Brother immediately nodded. “Exactly! A man may be killed, but never humiliated! Big Brother, why don’t we simply fight our way through? Let these petty bandits see what the Justice Warriors’ Regiment is made of, and let them understand that the tribute we sent them in the past was merely a matter of honor among those of the martial world—not because we feared them. Hmph!”

The Regiment Commander shook his head. “Third Brother, calm yourself. We must not let righteous indignation cloud our judgment. We know nothing about the enemy’s situation, and they possess both favorable terrain and timing. A head-on clash would be most unwise.”

“Then what do you suggest, Big Brother? We can’t reason with them, and we can’t fight our way through. Are we supposed to waste away here indefinitely?”

The Regiment Commander smiled faintly. “As far as I know, the brothers of the Bloodheat Regiment set out from Huyu City some time ago. Judging by the days that have passed, they should be arriving here soon. Once they do, we can join forces and attack from both front and rear. This band of bandits will surely be crushed.”

At that, the Third Brother’s eyes lit up. “That’s right! Everyone has wanted to pull out these nails along the road for a long time. Now that we have the opportunity, we may as well wipe them out in one stroke.”

The Regiment Commander nodded. “Brothers, until the Bloodheat Regiment arrives, each of you must remain at your post and strengthen your vigilance in case the bandits attempt a surprise attack. Go!”

“Yes!”

After everyone had dispersed, the Regiment Commander took a talisman from his robes and formed a series of hand seals. The paper flashed with light, fluttered, and transformed into a tiny bird. It rose into the sky and vanished beyond the horizon in the blink of an eye.

Two days later, Yu Mu suddenly awoke from his cultivation. The wandering spirit had spotted three familiar figures approaching from behind.

Alas, they were like ghosts that refused to disperse. They had caught up after all.

The newcomers were naturally Ye Yun and his two companions. Though the three were covered in dust from their journey, they remained completely unscathed—clearly unlike Yu Mu, who had endured countless dangers along the way.

Before they had even reached the camp, a patrol squad intercepted them. A minor officer called out, “Friend, halt. Who are you, and what brings you here?”

Ye Yun glanced down. Seeing that they were mercenaries, he said, “Let me ask you first: have you seen a man like this?” He then described Yu Mu’s appearance in detail.

“We have seen him, but that was several days ago. He had not yet reached Magu Ridge when he passed us and continued ahead. Judging by his pace at the time, he has probably reached Huyu City by now.”

Upon hearing this, Ye Yun did not waste another word. He rose into the air and prepared to leave.

“Wait! You—”

Before the minor officer could finish, Ye Yun said coldly, “Get out of the way. I still have a journey ahead of me. If you delay me, your mercenary regiment can forget about making a living in this region.”

This place still lay within the territory of the Three Sages, and Ye Yun naturally did not take these mercenaries seriously.

The minor officer was furious, but at a time like this, he dared not provoke unnecessary trouble. As long as the travelers posed no threat to the merchant caravan’s safety, there was no reason to continue obstructing them.

With a cold snort, the minor officer stepped aside. But when he saw the two women behind Ye Yun, a trace of concern crossed his face, and he called out again, “Wait!”

“Are you looking to die?” Ye Yun’s expression turned icy.

The minor officer ignored him completely and addressed the two women instead. “Bandits have set up a checkpoint ahead. No one may pass without being searched. You two ladies are breathtakingly beautiful, so please be extremely careful if you encounter them.”

Before either woman could reply, Ye Yun cut in with a laugh. “Bandits setting up a checkpoint? What a joke! This is the territory of the Three Sages. I’d like to see which blind bandit would dare block my way. Hmph! Let’s go!”

Without waiting for the others, he flew forward. Little Mei hurried after him.

An Shu hesitated briefly, then nodded to the minor officer. “Thank you for the warning, friend. Farewell.”

With an exasperated expression, she followed the others.

In less than the time it took to finish a meal, the three returned in dejection. Ye Yun wore a furious expression and had even sustained a few injuries. This time, they headed straight for the camp.

The mercenaries could not simply ignore such behavior. The one who intercepted them was still the same minor officer. He had already expected this outcome, and upon seeing Ye Yun’s bedraggled appearance, he said with undisguised amusement, “What brings you back, sir? I suppose you ran into a group of blind men who failed to recognize your esteemed face! Hahahaha…”

Everyone burst out laughing. They had long been sick of the man’s arrogance and discourtesy.

Ye Yun’s face flushed from green to white with rage. He shouted, “All of you, shut up!”

He then pulled a token from his robes. “Tell your commander that Ye Yun, Young Alliance Leader of the Free Alliance, has come to pay a visit. Tell him to come out and receive me at once. Hmph!”

With a cold snort, he flung the token at the minor officer.

The officer caught it and took one look. His laughter ceased immediately. “Please wait, friend. I’ll report this at once.”

He hurried away without daring to delay.

Before long, the Regiment Commander emerged with all his brothers. Their mercenary regiment frequently traveled within the territory of the Three Sages, and they naturally would not dare offend a colossus like the Free Alliance without good reason.

When they reached Ye Yun, the Regiment Commander held the token in both hands and respectfully returned it to him. “We had no idea the Young Alliance Leader would honor us with his presence. Please forgive our offense.”

Ye Yun had spent many years in the martial world and naturally knew when to stop pressing an advantage. He therefore replaced his anger with a smile. “You are too courteous. You must be the commander, I presume? I truly had no idea the bandit problem here had grown so rampant. This is due to our alliance’s failure to govern the region properly. Once I pass through, I will order my subordinates to eliminate this band of bandits.”

Then his tone shifted. “Before that, however, I will need to rely on your assistance to reach Huyu City.”

The members of the Justice Warriors’ Regiment all sneered inwardly at his words. Only the Regiment Commander remained expressionless as he replied readily, “Of course.”

An Shu and Little Mei both felt embarrassed, but Ye Yun paid no attention. Still smiling faintly, he asked, “Then, Commander, do you have any good plan for getting through the checkpoint?”

“Young Alliance Leader, I have an ally on the way here from Huyu City. Judging by the timing, they should arrive within the next few days. When they do, I intend to attack the checkpoint from both front and rear, break through it, and destroy the bandits.”

“Excellent!” Ye Yun nodded repeatedly. “Since that is the case, I shall trouble you all for a few days. Could you arrange several tents for us?”

“Certainly. Young Alliance Leader, please follow me.”

With that, he personally led the three of them into the camp.

“Bah! What a piece of work. He’s only arrogant because he has someone powerful backing him!”

The moment Ye Yun departed, everyone behind him wore resentful expressions, though all they could do was curse him under their breath.

When one made a living on another’s territory, how could one avoid lowering one’s head?

The Regiment Commander personally arranged three tents for the newcomers. After exchanging a few pleasantries with Ye Yun, he finally took his leave.

The moment he was gone, Yu Mu’s spirit slipped into the vicinity of the three tents, intending to investigate.

Ye Yun cultivated the Way of Darkness, so Yu Mu did not dare approach him too closely. Somehow, however, he found himself slipping into An Shu’s tent instead. Of the three, she was the only one toward whom he felt even the slightest goodwill.

An Shu had clearly been worn down by the days of travel and was already exhausted. The moment she entered the tent, she lay down fully clothed, intending to sleep.

But as soon as she had reclined, she suddenly sat up. “Who is outside?”

At the same moment, Yu Mu’s spirit darted behind her and concealed itself.

“Junior Sister Shu, may I come in?” Ye Yun’s voice came from outside.

An Shu hurriedly straightened her clothes. “Senior Brother, I’m a little tired and would like to rest. If there’s something you need, we can discuss it tomorrow… Ah! How can you enter without permission?”

By the time she finished speaking, Ye Yun had already barged inside.

An Shu was both furious and mortified. She scolded him sharply, “Senior Brother, how could you do something so rude? You forced your way into a young woman’s quarters. Leave at once!”

Her rebuke did not make Ye Yun uneasy. On the contrary, her panic and disheveled clothing stirred an intense desire within him.

Instead of retreating, he advanced two steps. “Shu, you have always known how I feel about you. With Senior Sister Little Mei beside us all these days, I have had no opportunity to speak openly. Now that it is just the two of us, perhaps you can ease the ache of my longing.”

As he spoke, he moved closer.

Humiliated and enraged, An Shu drew out her flute and leveled it at him. “Shut up! Ye Yun, I respected you as my senior brother. I never imagined you would be such a shameless and despicable man. How dare you…”

“Who are you calling shameless and despicable?”

At that moment, Little Mei’s voice suddenly came from outside the tent. She lifted the flap and entered with graceful steps.

Smiling brightly at the two of them, she said, “Are you two planning to spar with your mystical arts? Why didn’t you invite your senior sister?”

Little Mei’s smile was radiant, but her eyes were cold as frost.
