Chapter Thirty-Three: What Kind of Monster Are You?
Two days had passed. On this silent night, the peace was suddenly shattered by the cry of a crow.
"Urgent message, urgent message: there have been numerous casualties, suspected appearance of a Lower Moon demon."
"Flame Pillar Huan Yu, Insect Pillar Butterfly Shinobu, please proceed immediately to Mount Ihe, sixty-eight kilometers northwest."
"Flame Pillar Huan Yu, Insect Pillar Butterfly Shinobu, please proceed immediately to Mount Ihe, sixty-eight kilometers northwest."
Upon hearing the call, Chu Fan stepped out at once.
Whenever an incident involved the Lower Moon demons of the Twelve Demon Moons, significant casualties would follow. Butterfly Shinobu was usually dispatched for these missions.
Huan Yu would go to fight, while Butterfly Shinobu was there to assist the wounded.
"I'll go first. Butterfly Shinobu, gather your team and take your time—it doesn't matter if you arrive later," Chu Fan said as he saw Butterfly Shinobu step out of the Butterfly House. "I'll handle it."
After a long period of quiet, another wave of heavy casualties had occurred.
Chu Fan felt a sense of unease. According to the original timeline, he had never heard of Mount Ihe.
"Mm, be careful," Butterfly Shinobu replied softly, nodding.
Chu Fan did not respond to her concern. With a swift movement, he headed northwest.
Butterfly Shinobu watched as Chu Fan left without so much as a polite word and stood in silence for a moment before turning to prepare her departure.
Sixty-eight kilometers was not far for Chu Fan; running at full speed, he could cover the distance in an hour. If he used the Beginning of Fusion, he would be even faster.
But Chu Fan sensed something unusual about this mission. To conserve his strength and magic, he took two hours to arrive, fully restoring his mana.
He could have saved more lives by arriving earlier, but Chu Fan's priority was to ensure he could kill the demon he was about to face.
If he rushed in to help but let the demon escape, more lives would be lost.
Arriving at Mount Ihe, Chu Fan glanced at the mountain shrouded in ominous clouds and began his ascent.
Along the way, he encountered the corpses of several Demon Slayer Corps members.
All the bodies were male; not a single female corpse could be found.
The Demon Slayer Corps was never exclusively male—it included both men and women.
Now, only the men lay dead here, untouched by gnawing teeth, while the women were nowhere to be seen.
This discovery made Chu Fan's eyes flicker; a premonition he had felt grew stronger.
He continued to climb, reaching a clearing halfway up the mountain, adorned with beautiful red leaves, where a lone figure stood.
"This is the best place to watch the moon, don't you think?" the figure said, sensing someone behind and smiling.
But as Chu Fan examined the data of this person—
Name: Doma
Age: Twenty (turned demon)
Identity: Upper Moon Two of the Twelve Demon Moons
Health: 100%
Strength: 15
Agility: 14
Constitution: 25
Intellect: 13
Spirit: 14
Special Physique: [Half-Immortal]—only sunlight can deal a fatal blow.
Skills: Blood Demon Art: Lotus Ice—wields his fan to scatter lotus-shaped ice crystals. The freezing air emitted by the ice lotus will freeze the skin of those it touches, then freeze the air in their lungs, tearing them apart.
Fan Mastery lv.2
Among the Pillars, there were those whose physical abilities surpassed Doma.
But Doma's mastery of his skills was the true reason he had survived for centuries.
Aside from Chu Fan, the other Pillars relied heavily on their breathing styles to fight.
When facing Doma, with insufficient information, even a slight misstep at the start could spell disaster.
Their alveoli would be destroyed, rendering normal breathing techniques impossible, leading to a miserable death.
In the original storyline, Butterfly Shinobu endured over a year of poison consumption, using herself as bait and dying in battle against Doma, her body consumed by him.
Doma was then poisoned, and with the combined assault of Inosuke Hashibira and Kanao Tsuyuri, Shinobu's sister, they barely managed to kill the heavily wounded Doma.
If Doma had not been poisoned, most Pillars who faced him would likely die.
But upon seeing him, Chu Fan smiled.
Doma's presence allowed him to truly witness the power of an Upper Moon demon.
Chu Fan realized he could slay an Upper Moon demon of the Twelve Demon Moons.
Perhaps even Muzan Kibutsuji—he could challenge him directly.
"It seems my suspicions were correct, based on previous intelligence."
"As soon as there are mass casualties, you are dispatched to the scene, arriving immediately," Doma continued, hearing no reply from behind. He was about to turn around when a white shadow flashed into his peripheral vision—a blade burning with crimson flames swung straight for his head.
Doma's eyes narrowed; he managed only to push off with his foot, leaping backward.
But his speed was no match for Chu Fan's—he was severed at the waist.
The powerful blade wind even sliced through the trees a hundred meters behind Doma, the sound of snapping wood echoing as the trees crashed down, shaking the clearing.
Doma heard the cacophony of breaking branches and collapsing trees, and stared at the young but strikingly handsome man before him, his eyes filled with disbelief.
He tried to regenerate his body, but an inexplicable force prevented it.
Before Doma could react, Chu Fan grabbed his hair.
"Aren’t you a samurai? Attacking without warning—is there any honor to your way?" Doma, despite losing his lower body, spoke naturally.
"Blood Demon Art: Mist Ice—Water Lily Bodhi…" Doma tried to distract Chu Fan, unleashing a surge of power and activating his ultimate technique.
If he could release it, the white shadow before him would surely inhale the icy shards.
No matter how strong he was, his alveoli would fail, his power halved, and Doma could turn the tide.
"Fire?"
But Doma's plan failed. He watched as the white shadow before him erupted in flames.
Before his technique could fully manifest—
With a thunderous roar, a pillar of fire shot skyward from Chu Fan, illuminating the night forest in brilliant red.
Doma's ultimate move was vaporized by the searing flames before it could take shape.
His body was scorched; though he could not be killed by fire alone, the pain was unbearable, forcing him to cry out in agony.
Chu Fan, gripping Doma's head, switched his cursed cleaver for a Nichirin blade and swung.
Even as ice crystals formed on Doma’s neck in an attempt to block the blow, Chu Fan’s blade severed his head completely.
"What manner of monster are you?" Doma’s head tumbled to the ground. In his final moments, he stared at the pillar of fire, unable to comprehend.
