Chapter 135 Saving Bai Shengyun's Life
The sheer number of beasts was unprecedented, confirming their suspicion that the Snow Chant Sword was indeed hidden within this secret realm. However, the horde was far beyond what they could contend with, and the leading beast possessed strength rivaling that of Bai Qirui. Faced with such a disparity in power, victory was virtually impossible.
Xie Yingying and Bai Qirui exchanged a look, silently mouthing the word "run." They turned and fled at top speed toward the distance. The secret realm was not going anywhere; their priority was to save their lives first and return for the sword later.
As they sped away, the beasts pursued them relentlessly, their combined weight seemingly shaking the very foundations of the Peach Blossom Spring. But human strength has its limits. Exhausted from their journey and trapped on the beasts' home turf, the pair was quickly overtaken. They found themselves cornered at the edge of a bottomless cliff, with tens of thousands of monsters closing in behind them. There was nowhere left to run.
Xie Yingying and Bai Qirui locked eyes, a solemn gravity passing between them. At the end of their rope, they had no choice but to fight to the death. Both knew the odds were slim, but they refused to surrender without a fight. Drawing their weapons, they plunged into the swarm of beasts.
Instantly, the air was filled with the cacophony of battle cries and guttural roars. The beasts, enraged that these humans had desecrated what they held most sacred, burned with a predatory fury, eager to tear their prey apart. The slaughter was gruesome and cruel.
Unbeknownst to them, their struggle was being observed through a water mirror by someone hidden in the shadows: Xu Xiaosheng. A flicker of surprise crossed his face when he saw Xie Yingying. He had never imagined that the young human girl he had tossed into the snake pit could have survived, let alone make it this far. It was truly inconceivable.
He watched the man and woman with a faint, curved smile. They had triggered the protective seals of the Peach Blossom Spring, and those beasts existed solely to guard the treasures within. The creatures would not rest until the intruders were dead. Since they were as good as corpses, they were not worth his further attention. Xu Xiaosheng waved his sleeve, erasing the image, and turned his focus back to confronting the last surviving Primordial Demon in the world.
Meanwhile, the situation for Xie Yingying was dire. Both she and Bai Qirui were mere mortals and could not withstand the onslaught. The fighting was fierce; Bai Qirui was already drenched in blood and severely wounded. Xie Yingying’s state was even worse; she had been struggling with old wounds that had never healed, and now, piled with fresh injuries, she bled profusely. Her face was as pale as a ghost’s, and her grip on her weapon was failing.
Yet, for every wave of beasts they felled, another surged forward, their momentum growing ever more ferocious. It was a level of intensity that no ordinary human could sustain. Both knew they were reaching their breaking point. Sensing their exhaustion, the beasts let out a series of cries, tightening the circle around them, closing in step by step.
Back-to-back, gasping for air, Bai Qirui looked at the blood-soaked Xie Yingying and frowned. "Can you still hold on?"
Xie Yingying tightened her grip on her weapon. Despite the dizziness caused by blood loss, she bit her lower lip, pulling her mouth into a bloodthirsty smirk. She stared fiercely at the monsters before her. "Even if I can't, I have to. These beasts smell so foul—they probably haven't brushed their teeth in ten thousand years. I refuse to die in such a miserable way."
Taken aback by this reasoning, Bai Qirui let out a helpless, weary laugh. As expected, this girl’s stubbornness was as refreshingly unconventional as ever.
"Fine then!" A look of resolve flashed in Bai Qirui’s eyes. "They’re just beasts. Surely we can best them?" If a young girl could have such ambition, he, a grown man, had no excuse to fear death or fall short of her courage.
They shared a smile and charged forward once more.
Within half an hour, however, Xie Yingying dropped her weapon, pinned beneath the foot of a beast. A massive, bestial eye loomed before her, and the creature opened its gaping maw, its white, jagged teeth radiating a freezing chill. Xie Yingying furrowed her brows and held her breath.
*Damn it,* she thought, *this thing hasn't brushed its teeth in centuries, has it?*
The beast, possessing a sinister intelligence, seemed to sense her disdain. Enraged, it opened its jaws wide to swallow her whole.
"Xie Yingying!" Seeing her about to die right before his eyes, Bai Qirui lunged to save her.
At that critical, hair’s-breadth moment, a young man in white suddenly appeared. Seeing Xie Yingying lying in the dirt, covered in blood, with the beast’s jaws closing over her, he felt a sudden, sharp pang of agony in his chest. With a sweep of his palms, he struck the beast, sending it reeling with a shrill scream as its body burst into flames, collapsing heavily to the ground.
The youth rushed to the girl, scooping her up. Seeing her unconscious, he patted her face urgently. "Xie Yingying! Xie Yingying, wake up!"
Xie Yingying was jolted awake by the pain. As soon as she opened her eyes and saw him slapping her, she gritted her teeth and spat out, "Bai Shengyun, you son of a bitch!"
Her voice was thick with anger and grievance. This liar—he had promised to appear whenever she was in danger. She had been on the verge of death, and he hadn't been anywhere to be seen. A liar, a big liar!
Xie Yingying didn't even realize that the moment Bai Shengyun appeared, her entire body had gone limp with relief. As she spoke, fresh blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
Bai Shengyun felt as if a giant hand were tightly gripping his heart. "Stop talking. I’m taking you away now."
He clutched her to his chest and turned to Bai Qirui, asking in a low voice, "Third Brother, can you still move?"
Bai Qirui knew this was no time for pleasantries. He bit his lip and nodded. "I can."
Hearing this, Bai Shengyun left without hesitation. Bai Qirui had possessed the strength to flee earlier, but he had remained behind because he could not leave the severely wounded Xie Yingying behind. Now, as Bai Shengyun and Xie Yingying departed, he followed close behind.
The horde of beasts, seeing their "prey" being rescued, roared in fury and surged after them.
