Chapter 149: Changing Phones
"Fine. I'll take you to the Huadu Center; the selection there is much better."
Gu Yan spoke with an unconscious air of arrogance. Song Wanning knew that as the eldest daughter of the Gu family, she certainly had the capital to be arrogant, but most of the time, it was simply grating. They were all people, so why should someone feel superior just because they had a bit of money? Besides, the Gu family's business had only flourished because of the Wen family's constant support; it wasn't built on their own merit.
Song Wanning was well aware of this history between the two families. As a character who appeared frequently in the latter half of the book and served as a major rival to Jian An'an, the plot details regarding the Gu family were quite thorough. Although Song Wanning disliked Gu Yan’s personality, she kept her expression neutral. After all, what others chose to do was their own business; she only needed to focus on herself.
Before leaving, she sent a message to Wen Jingxing.
Song Wanning: [Jingxing, I’m heading to the Huadu Center with an old acquaintance. Don't worry about me.]
In the meeting room, just as the atmosphere had dropped to freezing, a WeChat notification chimed. In the midst of everyone’s extreme tension, the sound was jarring. Everyone was on edge; even Chen Shaoyuan, who had been hesitating about whether to speak to Young Master Wen, jumped in fright, thinking he had forgotten to silence his phone. They glanced at one another, wondering where the sound came from, before cautiously looking toward Wen Jingxing.
The next second, they saw Wen Jingxing pick up his phone. His expression softened significantly, as if he were chatting with someone.
Wen Jingxing typed a reply and sent it.
Wen Jingxing: [Alright, have fun.]
He initially wanted to transfer money to Song Wanning but frowned when he saw that WeChat restricted daily transfers to a maximum of 100,000 yuan. *This little bit of money—how would that be enough?*
He sent another message: [What is your bank account number?]
Song Wanning was confused upon receiving the message and replied: [I don't have a bank card. The one I had before was frozen.]
Wen Jingxing: [Where are you now?]
Song Wanning: [In Cheng Mu's car. He insisted on driving me there.]
Wen Jingxing: [Understood.]
After sending a message to Cheng Mu, Wen Jingxing put his phone down, only to realize that everyone was staring at him. "Continue with the report," he said. "What are you all looking at?"
The employee who had been called upon earlier was left in an awkward position. He was a newcomer, and the boss was clearly dissatisfied with his report. Wen Jingxing merely glanced at him, told him to sit down, and added that he should learn from his seniors. The crowd was astonished. Since when was Young Master Wen so easygoing? And so considerate! It seemed even an iron tree could bloom once it fell in love.
Meanwhile, Song Wanning and Gu Yan sat side-by-side in the back of the car, heading toward the Huadu Center. Gu Yan looked at the cameraman sitting in the front passenger seat, her expression sour. She wasn't sure if her previous awkward behavior had been captured. *But I didn't see the camera earlier, so it couldn't have been filmed, right?* Gu Yan consoled herself.
She didn't know, however, that viewers in the livestream were currently discussing her.
[I feel like Gu Yan is nowhere near as good as Song Wanning. She can't compare in looks or personality. I really don't know where Madam Gu found the confidence to insult Song Wanning indirectly.]
[She probably didn't see the camera earlier. Look at how well-behaved she is now.]
[Looking at her like this, she probably won't become a love rival to Song Wanning, right?]
[Yeah, even though Wanning was sick when she was young and doesn't remember people or things from back then, Gu Yan has been talking about how great things were the whole way here.]
Song Wanning listened with a faint expression. Throughout the journey, Gu Yan not only brought up their past but also listed everyone who used to hang out with Song Wanning. Song Wanning didn't say much, only responding occasionally. She suddenly regretted agreeing to go out with Gu Yan. If she had that time, she could have been resting or just being lazy—wouldn't that have been better?
As for what Gu Yan was saying, she didn't care at all. Only a fool would believe the words of a love rival. Especially since Gu Yan kept mentioning how close she and Wen Jingxing used to be, and how she loved to play with him in their neighborhood when they were children.
Song Wanning glanced at Gu Yan. "That was all in the past. It's over and done with, and besides, I’ve forgotten it anyway."
Her implication was clear: she wanted Gu Yan to stop talking. But Gu Yan acted as if she didn't understand. "Is that so? But to me, those are all cherished memories."
"Oh, really?"
A playful glint entered Song Wanning's eyes as she looked at Gu Yan, making the other girl feel somewhat guilty. For Gu Yan, they were indeed cherished memories. After all, every child in their neighborhood of the same age had played together. Wen Jingxing had only interacted with her more during that time, but as they grew up and went their separate ways to school, he had almost ceased contact with her entirely.
The car arrived at the Huadu Plaza, but Cheng Mu didn't stop.
Gu Yan asked curiously, "Where are you taking the car?"
Cheng Mu didn't answer Gu Yan, instead saying to Song Wanning, "Miss Song, the boss instructed me to take you to buy a few things."
Song Wanning was curious about what Wen Jingxing was up to. He hadn't said a word on WeChat, yet he had secretly ordered Cheng Mu to do this? It wasn't until Cheng Mu parked in front of a building specializing in electronics that Song Wanning couldn't help but ask, "Are we going to..."
"The boss said he wanted to buy you a new phone and told me to bring you here to take a look."
Song Wanning had originally wanted to refuse, but thinking of Gu Yan beside her—who, despite not doing anything overtly wrong, made her feel uncomfortable with every word—she decided otherwise. "Alright then, let's go."
If she was going to get a phone today, she was not only going to buy one, she was going to buy the most expensive one and enjoy every second of it!
Upon hearing Cheng Mu, Gu Yan's expression shifted, but she smiled at Song Wanning and said, "Your relationship with Young Master Wen seems very good..."
Song Wanning knew she was fishing for information again. Throughout the ride, Gu Yan had been dropping hints, but Song Wanning had only responded half-heartedly, leaving Gu Yan with nothing.
Inside the building, Cheng Mu led the way. He seemed very familiar with the place, guiding Song Wanning straight to the fifth floor where the mobile phone section was located. A sales assistant stepped forward to offer service. Song Wanning didn't know which brands were good in this world, so she simply asked the clerk which one was the best.
The clerk recommended three brands. Song Wanning chose one she liked the look of and told the clerk to bring her the model with the highest specifications.
