Chapter One Hundred and Twelve: The High-Society Tea Party
As soon as she finished speaking, she hurriedly ended the call.
Just after she tucked her phone into her pocket, the cameraman came looking for her. “Miss Jian, so you were here. I really had a hard time finding you. You walked off so quickly just now that the moment I came out of the living room, you were gone.”
Jian Anan gathered her scattered thoughts and returned to her usual self, lifting a gentle smile. “I’m sorry. I got a call from home just now and was a little anxious, so I ended up walking off faster than I meant to.”
The cameraman nodded on the surface, but he did not believe her in the slightest.
Anxious?
If she really had been anxious, why had she hung up that call over and over just now?
In his view, it was probably something unspeakable that she was afraid he might discover.
...
On the other side, Jiang Mingzhao, who had just arrived in the capital, was determined not to go home.
Even after Cheng Mu dragged him all the way to the gate of the Jiang family’s main residence, he still clung to the seat and said, “No, no! I’m going to Wen Jingxing’s place. It’s just a look, nothing will happen. Worst case, I’ll come back on my own. You don’t need to send me.”
Cheng Mu looked troubled. This was Wen Jingxing’s decision, not something a driver like him could decide.
But after Jiang Mingzhao had mentioned it to Wen Jingxing in the group chat, Wen Jingxing had not even replied.
Just thinking that Shen Yue, who had also arrived in the capital, would soon come looking for him was enough to scare him half to death.
Then suddenly it hit Jiang Mingzhao: if Wen Jingxing wouldn’t answer, why not try Song Wanning?
He was sure Song Wanning would help him!
Since sending a message seemed too slow, Jiang Mingzhao decided to call directly, but no one picked up for a long time.
Still unwilling to give up, he called again. This time the line finally connected, but the voice on the other end nearly scared his soul out of him.
“Hello? What do you want with Song Wanning?”
Wen Jingxing’s low, domineering voice rang out, and Jiang Mingzhao even forgot to answer.
“If you don’t speak, I’m hanging up.”
Knowing his little life mattered more than anything, Jiang Mingzhao blurted, “Don’t!”
“Mhm. What do you want with Song Wanning?”
That was still what Wen Jingxing cared about most.
“I tried to message you, but you didn’t reply, so I had no choice but to come to Song Wanning...”
The moment Jiang Mingzhao noticed there was still no sound from the other end, his voice grew smaller and smaller.
“Mhm. And then?”
“Can I come to your place?”
“Just that?”
“Yes, yes, yes!” Jiang Mingzhao nodded furiously, though Wen Jingxing could not see it.
“Fine. If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”
On the other end, Jiang Mingzhao excitedly told Cheng Mu, “Did you hear that? I told you I’m really, really good friends with Wen Jingxing! He’ll definitely agree to let me come to his place!”
From the cautious way Jiang Mingzhao had sounded on the phone just now, Cheng Mu already felt that was not the case...
“Since the boss has spoken, I’ll definitely take you there. It’s just that you’re not leaving your luggage at the Jiang house—what are you bringing it to the boss for...”
“No problem, no problem. When I leave, I’ll take it with me myself.”
“Really?” Cheng Mu was still a little uncertain, completely unaware that he had already been hooked.
Jiang Mingzhao had indeed promised to take his luggage away when he left, but he had never said when he would leave.
On the other side, Song Wanning, just out of the bathroom, asked, “Who was looking for me just now?”
Wen Jingxing was sitting on the sofa in Song Wanning’s room. “It was Jiang Mingzhao. He said he wants to come by.”
Since Song Wanning had been inconvenient to answer the phone just now, she had asked Wen Jingxing to take it for her, so she only asked again, “What does he want to come for?”
But after saying it, she felt it was a little unnecessary. It was obviously to avoid Shen Yue, who had also arrived in the capital.
It had to be said, those two were really rather amusing.
One was chasing desperately, the other fleeing desperately, and all of it added a little amusement to Song Wanning’s otherwise somewhat dull life.
As expected, happiness really was built on other people’s misery.
Still, Wen Jingxing answered, “He only said he wanted to come and have a look.”
“I see. Never mind, we’ll just head out with him later. Come take a look at my outfit first—what do you think?”
Song Wanning was wearing a purple flowing gauze gown. Even in daylight, the tiny sparkles scattered across the fabric could still be seen, lending it a distinctive elegance.
Although the neckline plunged deeply in a V, it cleverly wrapped her exquisite figure with perfect propriety.
The back of the dress was made of openwork embroidered fabric, revealing her flawless white back as well.
Her soft, silky long hair had also been tied into a side ponytail, with a few bright little flowers clipped into it.
The crown of her head was airy and full, a few strands falling beside her cheeks. Paired with her breathtaking face, she looked exactly like an immortal who had descended from the heavens into the mortal world.
Warm appreciation flickered in Wen Jingxing’s eyes as he praised her, “Very beautiful. It suits you perfectly.”
Song Wanning was delighted that something she herself had approved of was also being praised by someone else.
“We should go then! Nan Yan must have been waiting for a while.”
This afternoon, they had arranged to attend a tea party.
At the beginning, the contract Li Weiwei had signed with them stated that for one whole month, they were not allowed to leave the resort estate. But later, Li Weiwei realized that if the show’s virtual romance were made more realistic, it might attract even more shipper fans.
So she changed the guests’ range of activities and set the location in the capital, where most of the guests were based.
Only two of the eight guests were from other cities, so naturally the majority would have to head to the capital.
One thing, however, did not change: the production team would still assign the guests identities and tasks, and every three days they had to do something different.
Earlier, Li Weiwei had already posted the task in the group chat: at two thirty in the afternoon, the guests were to go to Central Flower City and attend a true tea party belonging to the wealthy elite.
All the guests had one task requirement, and that was not to let anyone discover or recognize who they really were.
The task was especially interesting.
After all, anyone with any real standing in the high society circle, as long as they attended any public gathering, would almost certainly be recognized by acquaintances.
Only those who had no name, no status, and no footing in high society would be able to go there without being recognized.
And that was the most wickedly entertaining part of the whole game.
Only people with no name, no status, and no friends in high society would go unrecognized, and only they could win the game.
But from another angle, it also proved that such a guest simply did not have much strength to speak of.
What had first made the show so appealing was that all the guests taking part were people of real standing.
And yet if one were to win this game now, it would feel like swallowing a fly.
It was just like the kind of game Li Weiwei would come up with: there was no such thing as the most vicious, only more vicious.
Song Wanning picked up her plain white little bag and was about to go downstairs when Wen Jingxing could not help laughing. “Why don’t you change to another bag?”
Song Wanning said, “No, no. Borrowing your clothes already makes me feel bad enough.”
She truly could not understand why Wen Jingxing had been so keen lately on giving her things.
Ah, she truly loathed overtime work of this sort.
