Chapter 64: Spicy Cold Pot Skewers
"Holy shit!! Look over there!"
Someone on the watchtower pointed into the distance. Dozens of agile figures were leaping high amidst the horde of zombies, stepping on the heads of their own kind as they closed in rapidly.
Before the previous wave of Tier 4 zombies was completely cleared, another wave of Tier 4 zombies arrived.
With only two Tier 4 supernatural beings guarding each watchtower, their approach instantly multiplied the pressure on every post.
"What is going on? Why are there so many Tier 4 zombies this time? Where on earth did they crawl out from?"
You must know that during the last massive zombie horde, only a single Tier 4 zombie king had appeared. The only Tier 4 supernatural being in the base at that time was the Lord of the City, but his mental-type ability could only control conscious humans, not zombies.
In the end, it took the combined efforts of Si Zhe and Lin Weiran—both Tier 3 supernatural beings—to kill that zombie king.
Ever since then, a few Tier 4 zombies would occasionally appear in the eastern hunting grounds, but not many. Some supernatural beings eager to advance to Tier 4 by hunting zombies would venture out of the city specifically for them, yet most of the time they would return empty-handed.
Why on earth were there suddenly so many Tier 4 zombies in tonight's sneak-attack horde?!
"Post Number 3! Several of them are heading toward Post Number 3!"
In the dark of night, the searchlights mounted atop the watchtower instantly illuminated the five or six rapidly leaping Tier 4 zombies.
Their pale and ferocious faces appeared even more horrifying under the glaring white light.
The densely packed horde below, wildly waving their arms, also inflicted immense psychological pressure on everyone.
Under these circumstances, those zombies had already closed in on the wire mesh.
One of them possessed the earth-type ability, and almost instantly summoned a vast expanse of dust and sand, piling it up right in front of the wire mesh to form a steep slope.
The zombie horde swarmed upward along the slope, forming an undulating wave in the blink of an eye.
Now, the supernatural beings on the watchtower had to deal with those few Tier 4 zombies while also dividing their attention to handle the endless stream of lower-tier zombies climbing up... As time dragged on, some of the supernatural beings exhausted their stamina. The zombies on the slope were on the verge of reaching the very top of the wire mesh; with just a single leap down, the ordinary people stationed behind the mesh would meet a gruesome death.
This breach would be completely lost! Who knew how many zombies might flood into the base!
The probability of ordinary people being bitten to death by zombies and turning into the undead was one hundred percent!
"Call for reinforcements! Post Number 3 calls for reinforcements!!!"
The frantic roars echoed between the watchtowers on either side. In the brief moment wasted, the arms of some zombies had already reached the very top of the wire mesh!
"Damn it, we can't hold them off!"
Despair flashed in the eyes of the supernatural beings whose abilities were completely depleted. They only had time to shout down to the ordinary people holding sharp spears: "Run! The zombies are about to jump down!"
Prompted by this shout, the crowd—already blinded by a frenzy of killing—finally raised their heads and saw one head after another popping up over the wire mesh.
"The zombies have climbed up!"
"Run! Don't wait for them to jump down!"
All the ordinary people fled blindly in panic, the scene extraordinarily chaotic. The miserable screams of many added to a suffocatingly dangerous atmosphere of terror.
Just as a stampede seemed imminent... a graceful figure suddenly appeared atop the crumbling Post Number 3!
"Stop."
When this moderate voice rang out, the remaining supernatural beings inside the watchtower stared in disbelief at the woman who had suddenly materialized.
Ordering zombies to stop? Would they actually halt just because she told them to?
She must be out of her mind...
Before this thought could fully form in their minds, everyone witnessed an immensely shocking scene—those lower-tier zombies swarming endlessly up the wire mesh actually stopped in their tracks!
Thousands of low-tier zombies unanimously ceased their attacks and roars. What a rare and unfathomable sight this was!
The woman standing at the very front spoke again: "Step down."
Those zombies actually obeyed and began walking back down!
Not only were the supernatural beings behind the wire mesh utterly stunned, but the Tier 4 zombies still under attack were equally bewildered!
The lead earth-type zombie let out a dissatisfied, low growl, as if urging its subjects to resume the attack.
Yet these brainless creatures, driven solely by higher-tier peers, broke away from its command for the very first time!
Su Su released the black snake in her arms.
"Xiao Hei, burn them to ashes."
The black snake slithered up the railing of the watchtower, raised its head toward the sky, and spewed a massive wave of blue flames. Flecks of starlight-like fire drifted toward the wire mesh, striking every single retreating zombie with pinpoint accuracy.
The moment the fire touched their clothing or skin, the flames surged violently, engulfing each zombie entirely until it was thoroughly scorched into a charred corpse.
The human and the snake cooperated flawlessly. The thousands of zombies that had moments ago nearly breached the defense line were reduced to ashes in the blink of an eye. Thick black ash covered almost the entire slope, completely obscuring the original yellowish dust.
Following a brief silence, cheers suddenly erupted.
"We held! Post Number 3 held!"
"The supernatural beings protected us!"
"Spirit crystals! Oh my god, I'm actually seeing a rain of spirit crystals!"
And was it not a rain of spirit crystals? Thousands of low-tier zombies turned to ash simultaneously, and countless mixed-type and Tier-1 crystals rolled down from mid-air. Had they not fallen outside the wire mesh, the crowd probably would have swarmed forward and picked them clean long ago!
The ordinary people who had been fleeing in panic also gradually slowed their steps, staring dumbfounded at the sky full of sparks outside the wire mesh and the horde of zombies reduced to ash in an instant... From some unknown moment, they picked up their sharp spears once again, regaining the courage to slaughter zombies!
As long as they beat back the zombie horde, the spirit crystals outside the wire mesh would be theirs for the taking!
The cheers even spread to the other watchtowers. All the supernatural beings atop them were concentrated entirely on dealing with the Tier 4 zombies; even if their peripheral vision caught sight of that astonishing sea of blue fire, they had no spare time to investigate.
"What happened?"
"Since when did the base have such a powerful fire-type supernatural being? This must be peak Tier 4, right?"
"Is that Lin Weiran from the Eternal Squad?"
"Impossible. Her ability produces red flames, whereas these are blue. In terms of sheer intensity, the latter is far stronger!"
"I was close by! I saw it! A young girl controlled the zombie horde, and the flames were spat out by the python she keeps!"
"Holy shit, where did this powerhouse pop out from? Why haven't I heard of her before?"
"I did hear that the City Lord was hosting a female supernatural being who keeps a battle pet..."
Walkie-talkies were equipped between every watchtower. Earlier, when Post Number 3 was breached, no one had time to rush over with reinforcements before the situation miraculously reversed.
Once the crisis was averted, everyone felt a surge of curiosity toward this newly emerged female supernatural being who kept a battle pet.
The walkie-talkies were on a public channel; as long as they were switched on, everyone on the same frequency could hear.
Lin Weiran and Si Zhe also heard these discussions through the walkie-talkie clipped to their teammate's waist.
"Su Su is here too."
Lin Weiran subconsciously glanced in the direction of Post Number 3, catching sight only of the lingering embers of the blue fire sea without a single figure in view.
Si Zhe did not turn his head. He killed a Tier 4 zombie with a expressionless face before saying, "She certainly likes to draw attention to herself."
As if afraid no one knew she could control zombies, and terrified that no one knew she kept a battle pet.
Lin Weiran remained exceptionally silent.
A faint discomfort stirred in the depths of her heart, though the emotion was too subtle, feeling almost as petty as begrudging someone else's success.
Yet... Su Su's appearance truly stole all the spotlight from the Eternal Squad.
Clearly, they had arrived at the Southern Base ahead of time, yet they still couldn't manage to avoid her... In the deepest, most secluded corner of her heart, Lin Weiran harbored a trace of resentment—did she ever do anything to wrong Su Su? Back then, they had agreed to part ways; why must Su Su haunt her relentlessly like an unshakeable ghost? Could it be solely to overshadow her at every turn?
Lin Weiran drew a deep breath. When she raised her head again, her peripheral vision suddenly caught sight of an unusual figure in the distance.
She fixed her gaze on it for a long moment, her heartbeat accelerating sharply: "Si Zhe! Look at that zombie!"
Si Zhe followed the direction of her finger—
There, in the endless zombie horde near the horizon where the earth met the sky, a massive gap had suddenly opened up.
A unique zombie was quietly infiltrating this way.
After staring for several seconds, Si Zhe's pupils violently contracted: "It's a Tier 5 zombie!"
After more than two months, a Tier 5 zombie had appeared for the very first time in an assault on a human base!
This was a crisis, but it was also an opportunity.
After all, apart from that python, the Southern Base currently did not possess a single Tier 5 supernatural being!
As long as they could be the first to acquire the Tier 5 crystal, the Eternal Squad would step onto an entirely new level. When that time came... standing on equal footing with the City Lord might even be possible!
Si Zhe and Lin Weiran exchanged a glance, then tacitly looked toward the earth-type supernatural being in their team.
...
The zombies near Post Number 3 had been completely wiped out.
A few Tier 4 zombies leaped about frantically but failed to regain control of the zombie horde, leaving them easily re-contained by other supernatural beings.
Everyone who had moments earlier mentally mocked the young woman as a fool: "..."
Their gazes had shifted from bewilderment to awe. An ability capable of controlling a zombie horde meant she could practically walk sideways across the base! Furthermore, she possessed a formidable battle pet!
Keep in mind that the fierce tiger of which the City Lord was most proud could only be brought to the hunting grounds for patrols to frighten low-tier zombies.
If it truly went up against a high-tier zombie, its legs would turn to jelly first.
Just as someone was contemplating whether to step forward and cozy up to her, the young woman's gaze hardened.
The black snake, which had been spewing flames in a 360-degree radius without a blind spot, stopped its movements simultaneously and raised its head with a perceptive jolt.
Su Su stroked its head: "Xiao Hei, you saw it too, didn't you?"
"Hiss!"
An animal's instincts were far sharper than a human's. It was the first to sniff out the scent of its own kind.
That was a presence as formidable as its own.
Su Su gazed into the depths of the fading zombie horde, murmuring, "This is my first time seeing a Tier 5 zombie."
One and a half years into the apocalypse, the era of high-tier zombies was finally dawning.
From this moment on, whoever seized the initiative to elevate their abilities would be able to snatch up greater resources for survival in the days to come.
He who is fast by one step is fast by every step.
The very second Su Su voiced her observation, someone else had already taken action!
Dust and sand stirred once more outside the wire mesh. High slopes rose successively within the crowded zombie horde, and two figures leaped down from the wire mesh, bounding forward step by step along the path of the elevated earth ridges.
