Chapter 47: The Unreasonable Woman
Chapter 47: An Unreasonable Woman
The married couple talked as they walked to an isolated spot. Gu Pan took out a snowmobile, and the two rode it home.
Nowadays, Gu Pan’s small team spent their mornings in free activity. They could practice self-defense or firearms, each focusing on their own weak spots. There were no strict rules among them; they could go wherever they wanted as long as it was safe.
When they reached the entrance of the residential compound, they saw Cheng Yang being pestered by a woman, and they seemed to be arguing. Since they were on the same team, seeing one of their own in trouble meant they naturally had to step forward and see what was going on.
Gu Pan and Lu Risheng walked over.
As soon as they got close, they heard the woman saying to Cheng Yang, "Cheng Yang, even if I was wrong before and betrayed you, you are a man—can't you forgive me just once? It's not like I was never good to you. You can't be this ungrateful."
Gu Pan’s jaw practically dropped. With that kind of logic, was this woman's brain filled with feces? What was she even thinking?
"Hold on, Cheng Yang isn't your father, why should he forgive you? Even if he were your father, he couldn't forgive you for just anything, could he? If your brain is full of water, go drain it," Gu Pan couldn't help but step forward and say.
Hearing Gu Pan’s words, the woman looked deeply aggrieved: "You're a woman too, how can you say that about me? Do you know how hard it is for a woman to survive right now? I'm just looking for something to lean on, am I wrong?"
Gu Pan raised her head and took a breath of fresh air. Good grief, she had never encountered someone like this even in peacetime, and running into one now was just unbelievable.
Before she could speak, Lu Risheng chimed in: "My wife is a woman, but she doesn't need to depend on anyone. She's right about you."
Hearing Lu Risheng say this, the woman grew anxious: "You—acting like a bootlicker like this, you won't come to a good end."
Gu Pan really couldn't hold back anymore: "Big sister, my husband defending his wife makes him a bootlicker, but you betray Cheng Yang, and when he wants nothing to do with you, you call him ungrateful? What on earth is your standard of judgment? Is everything that benefits you right, and everything that's good for others wrong?"
To be honest, this was the first time Gu Pan had ever met such an absurd specimen, and she couldn't help but chat a bit more—consider it finding some amusement in this apocalyptic world.
The woman looked at Gu Pan, her shoulders shaking as if she were crying. Of course, she wasn't actually crying, otherwise her face would get frostbite.
While faking tears, she looked aggrievedly at Cheng Yang: "How can this older sister twist my meaning like this? Please don't listen to what she says, her scheming is so deep."
Before the woman could finish, Cheng Yang forcefully poked her shoulder blade, holding back no punches, and directly sent her stumbling sideways: "Is my sister someone you get to badmouth? Don't force me to hit a woman. Mo Xiaoqian, I'm begging you, please never let me see you again, okay? You're making me want to throw up the meal I ate yesterday. How on earth did I ever fall for you—no, why did you used to act so normal? You actually seemed like a decent human being."
Gu Pan and Lu Risheng couldn't help laughing out loud from the sidelines. I mean, this Cheng Yang was truly quite funny.
The woman took two steps back, lost her footing, and fell flat on her rear. She looked at Cheng Yang in disbelief: "You hit me? My own father never even hit me, how dare you?"
Cheng Yang looked at her: "Your father didn't know how to raise a child, so he deserved to have a brainless daughter like you. I really must have been blind back then; was my vision upside down when I took a fancy to you? I'm telling you, if you come near me again, I'll finish you off." With that, Cheng Yang pulled out his gun.
Upon seeing the gun, instead of running away, the woman actually dropped to her knees in front of Cheng Yang: "I knew you were capable! Since you have a gun, I'll stay with you. You'll protect me from now on, right?"
Gu Pan’s head was full of question marks. What? Was this person out of her mind?
Cheng Yang chambered a round and pressed the muzzle against the woman's forehead: "Three seconds. If you don't run, I'll make sure you never have to walk again."
Hearing the click of the gun being cocked, the woman finally felt fear. After all, if the gun went off by accident, her life would be over. She scrambled away on all fours.
Gu Pan and Lu Risheng looked at Cheng Yang, trying hard to hold back their laughter.
Cheng Yang awkwardly explained to the two of them, "Brother, Sister, you don't know how good she used to be at acting. To get close to me, she faked chance encounters, buttered up the people around me, and built an image of being poor, ambitious, and filial. At the time, it really stirred up my protective instincts. But what happened? A few days later, through me, she met someone richer and ran off with him. Deciding I was useless, she dropped her disguise right in front of me. Today, after being dumped by that person and having no way to survive, she came crawling back to me. But now, no matter how she tries to act, she can't strike the right balance anymore—especially since her mask had already fallen off in front of me. So she ended up making a total farce of this. I really am making a fool of myself in front of you."
Gu Pan tried to suppress her smile as she looked at Cheng Yang: "Do you need comfort?"
Cheng Yang shook his head: "Sister, please don't mock me."
Gu Pan said, "I've also never seen anything like this before, so it was actually quite interesting. It's just... well, you're still young, a little setback like this is nothing..."
"Sister, if you're not all that keen on comforting me, then don't. If you want to laugh, just go ahead and laugh." Cheng Yang himself was torn between tears and laughter.
Gu Pan couldn't hold it in any longer and burst out laughing. Lu Risheng couldn't contain himself either, and joined Gu Pan in laughter.
Cheng Yang started laughing too. He had long since gotten over it; it was just a bit awkward at first, but now that they were all laughing, the awkwardness vanished.
The three of them chatted about the incident as they walked back upstairs. The good thing about Cheng Yang was that he learned his lesson. Because of this woman's cheating, he was now as rational as a rational person could possibly be. On this point, Gu Pan and the others felt quite reassured—he would never be fooled by a woman again.
Once upstairs, they all went back to their respective homes to eat. In the afternoon, they still had to go out together to scavenge for supplies. After all, there were still many sealed-off places in the university area that had yet to be discovered. Once the weather warmed up and the snow melted into water, a lot of food would mold and rot, which would be such a waste.
Today, they ventured further toward the outer edges, heading to sparsely populated areas as much as possible. Even if supplies were meager there, they could still find a bit more than elsewhere.
However, their harvest today wasn't much, so they just brought it back directly, along with quite a bit of wood they picked up for burning.
Upon returning, they heard gossip in the hallway: an elderly person on the eighth floor had passed away. The person wasn't extremely old, but in order to save food for a child, the elder had survived entirely on water, lying to the child that they were eating, while actually saving everything for them.
The child only discovered this after the elder passed away in their room, and by then, the child was crying their eyes out.
Gu Pan and the others felt a lingering sense of emotion. The apocalypse truly acted like a mirror reflecting human hearts. Some blood relatives would slaughter each other over a scrap of food, while other blood relatives would rather sacrifice their own lives to let the younger generation survive.
The following week passed relatively peacefully for Gu Pan and her group. During this time, the combat strength of their small team had grown significantly.
Supplies were becoming increasingly harder to find, but fortunately, they had stored up plenty beforehand, so they had nothing to worry about. Of course, whenever they had time, everyone still went out; no matter what little they managed to find, it was always useful.
