Chapter 8: Some Speculations About Inazuma and Watatsumi Island

Those of you who have finished the new storyline should have already noticed that there are no living people left on Watatsumi Island.

First, the number of monsters on Watatsumi is abnormally high. When you ask the little boy how old he is, he answers "several thousand years," though this is later brushed off vaguely.

Second, during conversations, the boy mentions that the island once only had a certain kind of animal—something delicious, but I’ve forgotten what it was called—and that he doesn’t know when so many monsters suddenly appeared. Clearly, such a transformation wouldn’t happen overnight or within just a year or two.

Third, and most strikingly, when you explore the other three Sacred Trees, no matter how you move, that boy always arrives ahead of you. After completing the underground puzzle at Chihayama, the exit leads right in front of another Sacred Tree, where the same little boy is also present. It’s deeply unsettling upon reflection.

As for the story of the Thunderbird, I’ve condensed it a bit:

A tribal boy met a Thunderbird through his singing and promised to sing a different song to the Thunderbird when it returned.

When the Thunderbird came back, it found only a golden cup on the altar, filled with blood. Enraged, the Thunderbird wiped the tribe from the earth as a response to the fleeting song it once heard.

The ignorant tribe thought blood was the best offering to the Thunderbird, but to the Thunderbird, faith and sacrifices meant nothing; it was the boy’s song and promise that truly mattered.

Then there are the new monsters. The official sources have mentioned that these creatures are related to the Abyss. Rumors online say that after the Wanderer took the Divine Heart intending to use it himself, he fled to Watatsumi. If this plotline is true, it makes sense that the Cryo Archon sent the Wanderer to Watatsumi, since his background mentions he has been to the Abyss. This further suggests a connection between Watatsumi and the Abyss.

As for Inazuma itself, several islands require puzzles to be solved—purifications here, purifications there. Think about it: who was the Electro Archon fighting in that war? And why does only Inazuma have a Sacred Sakura tree that needs to be purified of corruption, while Liyue and Mondstadt do not? I believe Inazuma still holds many secrets, possibly linked to the Abyss. This might lead to a major quest down the line, perhaps involving the sister and brother’s connection to the Abyss.

There are rumors that the kitsune will appear in version 2.4 and Ganyu will be rerun in 2.5—I don’t know if that’s true, but for now, just save your Primogems.
