Chapter 28: Transmigrators Come and Go, But Dugu Bo Remains Eternal
Chapter 28: Transmigrators Come and Go, but Dugu Bo Remains
"Immortal herbs?" Bibi Dong searched her memory before remarking, "Are those the herbs that Chrysanthemum Douluo spent his entire life searching for in vain?"
Noticing the significant softening in Bibi Dong’s tone, Zhong Yan finally felt his heart settle. He realized that Xiao Wu was safe for now.
"Teacher, you know my abilities; I would never lie to you about something like this."
"I naturally know that, but such items gather the spiritual essence of heaven and earth and are extremely rare. Even if you knew of one or two, their value to me would be far less than that rabbit."
"One or two might indeed be nothing. While rare, their suitability is uncertain, and whether they can be used is another matter. But what if there were enough of them?"
Truth be told, Zhong Yan did not know exactly how many were at Dugu Bo's place. After all, who could remember such fine details from the original work? (I find myself having to flip through the original while writing; I’ve truly forgotten most of it. I haven't even read the second installment of the series, let alone the rest.)
In the original story, Tang San consumed two himself, gave one to each of the Shrek Seven, and gave one to Grandmaster. Therefore, the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well certainly contained far more than ten. This quantity should be enough to satisfy Bibi Dong.
Then there was Dugu Bo. Not only did Tang San strip his medicinal garden bare, but he also turned it into his own legacy. Look at the later installments; the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well eventually became property of Shrek Academy. Beyond emptying the garden, Dugu Bo also promised to perform three tasks for Tang San, effectively binding himself to Tang San’s cause.
In the original narrative, whether it was Bibi Dong intercepting Tang San or capturing Xiao Wu, Dugu Bo intervened both times, thoroughly offending the Spirit Hall. He was truly a man of loyalty.
Unfortunately, he helped Tang San and helped Shrek!
Tang San never prepared a single immortal herb for Dugu Bo or Dugu Yan, and even after the Shrek Seven attained godhood, they never once offered to help Dugu Bo. Tang San was quite selfish, though he treated his own people well enough as long as his own interests weren't compromised. It was a pity that while Dugu Bo confided in Tang San, Tang San never truly considered Dugu Bo one of his own.
Having thought this through, Zhong Yan felt a sense of relief and refocused his attention on Bibi Dong.
"Very well." After a moment of contemplation, Bibi Dong agreed.
In truth, her decision was driven largely by curiosity. Ancient texts recorded that immortal herbs captured the fortune of heaven and earth, gathering their spiritual essence to grant inconceivable powers. Yet, despite controlling such a vast power as the Spirit Hall, she had never laid eyes on one.
With the matter of the rabbit settled, Bibi Dong finally had time to address Zhao Wuji and his group.
As Bibi Dong cast her gaze toward them, Zhong Yan turned to examine them as well, reflecting on the contents of the original story.
Zhao Wuji? Though he had his flaws, when the Titan Giant Ape appeared, he had been prepared to sacrifice his life to save those students—students, it should be noted, four of whom he had known for less than two months.
Dai Mubai? Hah, a piece of trash.
Ma Hongjun? Garbage, even worse than Dai Mubai.
(I don't even care to waste words on Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun. If any of you are unfamiliar with them, feel free to mention it in the comments; I will look up the source material and revise accordingly later.)
Ning Rongrong? A spoiled young miss, though she improved significantly after being tempered at Shrek.
Zhu Zhuqing? What a pity, such a shame for a girl like her. No, I cannot stand by and watch a girl with such self-respect and strength be tied down to trash like Dai Mubai; it weighs too heavily on my conscience.
Seeing Bibi Dong and Zhong Yan staring at them, the group couldn't help but grow nervous.
It was Zhao Wuji who spoke first: "Your Holiness the Pope, regarding..."
Bibi Dong pointed at Xiao Wu and said, "I am taking this child with me. Rest assured, I will not harm her."
"Teacher, take Tang San with us as well."
"Hmm? You want me to take Tang San too? Do you know he is the son of Tang Hao? The disciple of Yu Xiaogang!"
Zhong Yan thought that if he took Xiao Wu away, given Tang San’s personality, he would likely resent the heavens and the earth. Furthermore, doing this wasn't entirely for his sake.
I truly cannot stay awake any longer, brothers. I am going to sleep; I will add the unfinished parts to tomorrow’s update.
