Chapter Nine: Bringing the Female Ghost to the Dormitory

In the car, it was still the same driver from before. He flashed a broad yellow grin. “Little brother, did you have fun at Grandpa’s place?”
“Uh… yes… it was fun!” It truly was quite thrilling!
Along the way, the driver relentlessly asked me questions; some I was too lazy to answer.
“Hey kid, what did you guys do for fun?”
“…” I couldn’t very well say I was hanging out with ghosts!
“Why didn’t you bring Grandpa to the city, kid?”
“He didn’t want to go…”
“Kid…”
“…”
“Kid…” Before long, I fell asleep! After two hours, I arrived at school. I put Huang Ying into my backpack and headed to my dormitory.
Our dorm rooms housed eight people. I was assigned to bed number six, the top bunk by the balcony.
This spot was perfect in terms of timing, location, and company. The only downside was that every day I had to endure the ammonia smell from the bathroom.
I was the first to arrive since I came to school a day early.
Seeing no one else in the dorm, I let Huang Ying out, worried she might suffocate inside the little box.
She sat upright on bed number three across from me, watching as I made my bed and folded my blanket.
Our eyes met briefly—just a second—and she immediately looked away, pretending to be casual, but her flushed face betrayed her embarrassment.
I smiled to myself. Women like her from the past were far better; nowadays, even if a woman sleeps with others, it’s often seen as acceptable.
My quilt was the kind with a duvet cover and filler inside. The hardest part was fitting the filler into the cover—a task that previously required the combined effort of four burly guys in our dorm.
This time I was alone. I took a deep breath, confidently grabbed the filler, and tried stuffing it inside. But to my disappointment, the filler was too big, and the cover’s opening too small. After several failed tries, I finally managed to get it in, only to realize I had bunched it all up.
Huang Ying, unable to watch any longer, said, “Let me help you.”
Though she couldn’t touch things with a soul, she could handle physical objects like the filler.
With her help, I barely exerted myself, and the bed was neatly made in no time.
This proves that a man is happiest marrying one of two types of women: first, a beauty, since physical happiness accounts for sixty percent of a man’s joy; second, a homemaker—one who cares for the family and manages chores well.
If a man can marry either of these two, his life is without regret. Huang Ying embodies both. In looks, she rivals any international model—otherwise, she wouldn’t have endured so much humiliation. In terms of homemaking, few nowadays compare to women of the past.
After finishing the bed, she sat at the edge, gazing out the window, while I felt tired and lay down, my head resting just on the hem of her skirt.
Feeling the skirt pressed beneath me, she shuddered, nearly stumbling off.

I quickly sat up, chuckling, “Sorry, old habits die hard!”
Huang Ying blushed but replied, “It’s okay!”
I noticed her face flushed at least ten times a day.
Back then, a few of us men in the dorm often ran around naked, having grown used to openness. Huang Ying was different. Decades ago, before the founding of the People’s Republic, society was very strict with women. Now, any loose behavior in their eyes is seen as promiscuity.
I thought it was inappropriate for her to stay in the boys’ dorm, so I considered renting a place outside.
“You rest here a bit. I’m going downstairs to do laundry,” I said, noticing her awkwardness sharing my bed, so she got up voluntarily.
“I’ll help you,” Huang Ying offered.
“No need. It’s crowded downstairs. Better if you stay here.”
“Oh…”
I went to the bathroom to change clothes. Normally, I’d just do this on the bed, but out of consideration for Huang Ying, I hid in the bathroom.
After stripping off, I suddenly realized I’d forgotten to bring my clean clothes inside!
Worse, the dirty clothes I took off were tossed into a bucket filled with water. Now I had nothing on but my bare skin!
“Huang Ying,” I called awkwardly.
“Yeah?”
“Could you close your eyes?”
“Oh.” Though she didn’t know what I was doing, she obediently shut them. I peeked out cautiously and saw she really had closed them before stepping out—if she saw me naked, she’d surely blush all over.
I tiptoed to the cupboard, dressed, and then told her to open her eyes.
“You rest here a while; I’m going down,” I said.
“Okay!”
At the sink, I scrubbed clothes vigorously, water splashing on my face, trying to clear my head. Then it hit me: the past two months weren’t a dream—they were real. I had not only seen ghosts but was now living with a female ghost.
Some things, before you encounter them, you hold a certain belief; after you meet them, your attitude changes.
I hurriedly scrubbed a few more times, grabbed the bucket, and headed upstairs—but as I reached the dorm door, my heart sank.
“Someone’s here!”
I had clearly closed the door earlier, but now it was ajar, with a box blocking the entrance!
What to do? Huang Ying was still on my bed.
What if she got scared or someone had ill intentions toward her?
Peeking through the crack, I saw my bed was empty. I breathed a sigh of relief.

I pushed the door open. It was the occupant of bed number three. He was lying on the bed, resting, with no bedding made!
His name was Chen Yuming, tall and thin, wearing black glasses—an obviously sharp guy.
He heard the noise at the door, jumped up, and excitedly hugged me. “Number six, damn, it’s been two months! I missed you so much!”
“Heh, I missed you too!”
“Hahaha, really?” Then he caught himself. “What do you mean ‘miss me so much’? You want me dead or what?”
“…”
“Forget it, not arguing. You know what I saw on your bed just now?”
“What?” I played dumb, guessing he must have seen Huang Ying.
“Guess.”
He grinned mischievously. Even I, a grown man, got goosebumps from his gaze.
“Can’t guess!”
“Come on, guess!”
“If you don’t tell me, I’m going to bed!”
I climbed onto my bed, but he grabbed me.
“Such no fun. Fine, I’ll tell you—I saw a beautiful girl on your bed.”
Another sly grin, plus a lecherous and cunning look!
I knew it was Huang Ying but pretended not to care. “Really? What was she like?”
“Very pretty, big chest, young, and most importantly, she looked pure as hell! Like a fairy, even her body was like a fairy’s—ethereal, elusive!”
Seeing his lascivious expression, I knew he was scheming toward Huang Ying.
“Damn, you didn’t sleep well last night, huh? There’s no beauty here. If you want women, go to the walking street—two hundred for two hours!”
“If you don’t believe me, fine. Such a beauty must be heaven’s gift to me. You mortals couldn’t possibly see her.”
“I spit on that nonsense. You like her? You deserve her?” I thought to myself that a woman like Huang Ying was someone I could truly be worthy of.
After some banter, I convinced him it was a hallucination, and he believed it. He lay down, presumably to dream of Huang Ying some more.
Once his snoring started, I carried the little box to the bathroom.
“Come out, no one’s here!” Huang Ying peeked out and, seeing no one, stepped out.
She patted her chest, “That was close!”
But then I realized I couldn’t keep living at school. It was too easy to be discovered. It was only the first day, and someone had already seen her. Over time, it would become impossible to hide.
