Chapter 50: Has Someone Been at Li Yun's House?
As soon as I mentioned it, Chen Yuming remembered. That time, I had originally planned to scare him by telling him never to expose his back to an enemy, which prompted him to claim that someone had touched his back.
At first, I thought he only said that to play along with me, but looking at it now, that wasn't the case.
There were three possibilities: the first was Li Yun; the second was the mysterious person who had always been by Li Yun's side—though I didn't know whether Li Yun even knew that mysterious person; and the third was some other ghost in the school.
The probability of the first two was extremely high, especially the second one, because given Li Yun's personality, she wouldn't do something specifically to scare people.
"I remember, man! That scared the hell out of me, I still have nightmares about it to this day!" The moment the subject was brought up, Chen Yuming immediately put on a terrified expression, patting his chest as he leaned closer to me.
"Damn, it's only been a few days, how did you turn into such a sissy? It's broad daylight, is it really that terrifying?!" I flicked him right on the forehead.
"Oh right, right, let me ask you something," Chen Yuming said, looking at me with a sneaky expression.
"What is it?" I crossed my arms and took a step back.
Seeing my reaction, Chen Yuming immediately shoved me and said, "Damn, I'm not into you! What I want to ask is, didn't you promise to let me meet that beauty who was in your bed last time? When are we going?"
If he hadn't brought it up, I would have completely forgotten. It was precisely for this reason that he had been sticking to my heels all this time.
"Didn't I tell you? She left for now, I'll let you meet her after a while."
"Oh, is that so?" Chen Yuming sighed in disappointment. "Then are you living alone right now?"
"Yeah!"
"Where do you live? I'll go pay a personal visit!" Chen Yuming flashed two seductive winks at me.
"A public restroom. I'm heading to the restroom right now—want to come pay a visit?" With that, I ducked directly into a nearby public restroom.
"Fine! Just to keep you company, I'm going to personally use a restroom today!"
Pfft...
I spat—not saliva, but urine. The moment I pulled down my pants, I heard such a bizarre remark. What did "personally use a restroom" even mean? Was he implying that someone else used to use the restroom for him in the past?!
After finishing up, Chen Yuming and I went our separate ways. I felt somewhat like a lone wolf nowadays, doing everything by myself. It seemed I needed to find someone like-minded in the future, or perhaps I could just have Huang Ying follow me around every day.
After parting ways with Chen Yuming, I went straight to Li Yun's home. I hadn't come to check on the place for several days and was somewhat worried about her parents. Regardless of whether that letter was written by Li Yun or not, I had an obligation to take care of her parents' remains and ensure they weren't damaged.
I carried the keys to Li Yun's house with me everywhere.
This place remained as secluded as ever. An isolated villa stood here, surrounded by rings of trees and grass. The setting sun could not pierce through, making the area look both gloomy and damp.
I unlocked the outer iron gate and entered the desolate villa. There was not a trace of life inside, and all the doors and windows were tightly shut.
First, I opened the cold room where the remains were kept. The two freezers still lay there in isolation.
I approached the freezers. One was empty, while the other held a middle-aged couple lying side by side.
I stood before the freezer for a long time, imagining Li Yun lying right inside here, dressed in a black dress.
An inexplicable sorrow washed over me.
The feeling of a place remaining after the person is gone was truly like this. Although I wasn't a woman, I seemed to understand the feelings of those lonely, neglected women sequestered in their chambers.
Just as I was sinking into deep melancholy, I glanced at Li Yun's parents lying in the casket.
Suddenly, my eyes froze as I beheld something unbelievable.
I remembered that the last time I left, Li Yun's father's hands had been folded across his abdomen, but now, his hand was holding the hand of Li Yun's mother.
A sudden realization struck me, and I bolted out of the cold room, rushing into the main hall of the villa.
The grand hall was empty. I immediately raced upstairs and used the spare key I brought along to open Li Yun's bedroom. It was empty—no one was there. The arrangement was identical to last time, with not a single thing changed!
Someone must have been here. Dead people couldn't change the position of their own hands.
There was only one explanation: someone had come and rearranged their hands, and the person most likely to have done this was Li Yun.
I searched the villa frantically, but failed to catch a glimpse of anyone.
Perhaps she had already left before I arrived. I pulled out my phone and dialed her number—no one answered!
What on earth had happened to her? I knew nothing, completely devoid of any clues.
"Ah..." I grabbed my hair and let out a long howl toward the sky inside the great hall.
Only this method could alleviate the oppression weighing on my chest.
After pacing back and forth crazily in the house while clutching my head, I sat on the sofa to calm down for a moment. A woman's IQ hits rock bottom when she falls in love, and a man's IQ hits rock bottom when he is frantic.
I sat there and tried to sort through the bizarre events of the past few days.
First, the mysterious person called me using the dormitory manager's phone; then came Li Yun's mysterious disappearance; after that, the mysterious person called me again; and finally, someone had visited Li Yun's place.
Well, my sorting was useless; I still knew nothing.
Determined not to miss a single clue, I tore the house apart from top to bottom. Making sure I hadn't overlooked anything, I used the key to lock the door and left the place. Staying there always made me feel terribly restless.
Once outside, I didn't head straight home. Instead, I sat on a park bench to catch some breeze before returning. Every time I thought of Li Yun, I didn't know how to face Huang Ying. If Huang Ying could have been just a little bit more assertive, perhaps things wouldn't have turned out this way at all.
After sitting for about twenty minutes, I went back home, stopping along the way to buy a pair of gloves!
As soon as I opened the door, I pulled Huang Ying right out. I was going to do something bold: take her out without any cover!
Having absorbed Old Man Wu's soul, Huang Ying's physical condition had improved even further. Unless looked at in broad daylight, it was truly impossible to tell anything was amiss with her body.
"Where are we going?" Huang Ying asked as I jogged along, holding her hand.
"We're going out to play!" I replied.
When we reached the riverside, I dialed Chen Yuming's number.
"Hello, Lao Wang, what is it?" Chen Yuming's lazy voice came through the receiver.
"Get out here and hang out!"
"I stayed up all night playing games yesterday, I'm catching up on sleep today. Stop messing around!"
"Didn't you want to see that beauty? She's right here with me. You have fifteen minutes to get to Riverside Park."
"Don't let him touch you later!" I instructed.
Although Huang Ying didn't know what I was planning to do, she still obediently nodded!
Wearing a pair of extremely thin gloves, I gripped her hand.
From afar, I spotted Chen Yuming and waved at him to come over.
Chen Yuming ran all the way, his clothes already soaked in sweat.
From the moment he laid eyes on the two of us, his gaze remained fixed on Huang Ying, his eyes filled with pure infatuation!
"I... I... My name is Chen... Chen Yuming!" Whether he was spooked by Huang Ying or captivated by her appearance, he was stuttering.
Seeing his expression, Huang Ying instinctively stepped a bit behind me.
Upon seeing this, Chen Yuming immediately nudged me and said with a serious expression, "Are you a block of wood? Introduce us!"
I threw an arm around his neck, dragged him aside, and said, "I don't want anyone else to know that Huang Ying is a ghost! Please!"
Chen Yuming nodded firmly. I had already discussed this matter with him early on.
"Come on, today's your lucky day. You get to be the tour guide for me and Huang Ying and take us out to have fun!"
Chen Yuming naturally agreed with eager enthusiasm. I bet that if he were given two choices—one being five million bucks, and the other being able to stay with Huang Ying for a day—the current Chen Yuming would choose the latter without a moment's hesitation.
Perhaps to us outsiders it sounded impossible; with five million, what kind of woman couldn't you find? But you would never understand the feelings of someone truly caught up in it, just as we couldn't understand King纣 of Shang's obsession with Daji, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang's devotion to Yang Guifei, or King You of Zhou's infatuation with Baosi. No one could comprehend why they acted that way, because none of us were the ones experiencing it firsthand!
"Let's go, he's taking us out for a stroll!" I pulled Huang Ying along and pointed at Chen Yuming with my other hand.
Seeing me holding Huang Ying's hand, Chen Yuming immediately asked, "What is your relationship?"
"She's my girlfriend!" Although we had never formally acknowledged our status, our bond far exceeded that of ordinary lovers.
The moment I finished speaking, Chen Yuming's expression changed drastically.
"But you and I can compete fairly!" I added without a care in the world.
Sure enough, upon hearing those words, Chen Yuming's face broke into a grin as he looked back at Huang Ying.
I gave Huang Ying a look, signaling her to nod in agreement.
To my utter surprise, however, Huang Ying did not nod this time—she shook her head instead.
